A sandy moorland North of the Adour river in the former city of the Tarbelli, Lanescq is a sparsely populated country. The first and rare traces of human occupation date back to the Iron Age as hinted by the discovery of some burial-places. Consequently, the situation contrasts with countries South of the Adour river and it's reasonable to believe that the whole Landais plateau was populated from the mountains in connection with age-old phenomenons such as transhumance. Ancient toponymy is rather Basque : Arrast, Lesgor, Larbiei, ... The main town is Rion-des-Landes (formerly Arrion).
