Noirmoutier Island (the "black monastery") was formerly known as Hero in ancient texts. Inhabited since prehistoric times, no traces of megalithic activity are to be found because of maritime erosion on the Atlantic coast. Tools from the Lower Paleolithic (Acheulean) were found in Bois-de-la-Chaize but this industry was not developed by anatomically modern Humans.

- Echantillon représentatif / Sample :
Taille réelle / Full Scale- Analyse anthropologique sommaire / Brief anthropological analysis :
- Type 1 : "Complexion" intermédiaire (cheveux de blond foncé à noir, yeux parfois gris, ...), leptomorphique, menton pointu, long nez droit implanté haut, oreilles décollées, yeux rapprochés
~ Atlantide
Intermediate complexion (from dark-blonde to black hair, grey eyes, ...), leptomorphic, pointy chin, high-rooted and long straight nose, flappy ears, close-set eyes
~ Atlantid

This is the main Western French type which was already identified in many other places of the French Atlantic. Here, lighter individuals are found showing secondary traits quite typical from the coast such as high cheekbones, narrox eyelids, a very pointy chin and a long and narrow convex nose.

- Type 2 : Complexion intermédiaire (cheveux châtains, yeux verts-gris, ...), brachymorphique, tête ronde, petit nez épaté, yeux étroits et éloignés (apparence pseudo-"mongoloïde")
~ Alpin
Intermediate complexion (chustnet hair, green-grey eyes, ...), brachymorphic, rounded head, little puffy nose, narrow and wide-set eyes (pseudo-"Mongoloid" look)
~ Alpinoid

Type classique de la France de l'Ouest, abondamment commenté dans les échantillons correspondants. Il est complété par une série de complexion plus foncée.
This is a classical type from Western France about which we've already said much in appropriate samples. It is completed by a darker series.

- Morphotypes finaux / Final morphotypes :
Just for the record, as it seems you are interested, my B.I. (Basqueness index) for this island is of 5/32 (16%, or something like 32% after corrections), quite average for the area. The Britishness index is like 7-8/32 and the Iberian index is like 5/32. The rest are pan-European or types that are probably France-only, like B2, who looks Mediterranean but doesn't seem to fit with either Iberian, Italian nor Balcanic types (much less transmediterranean ones).
ReplyDeleteHowever some of the "Basque" types are ambiguous enough to fit also in Britain (but they look more archetypally Basque to me). The biggest doubt is A1 who is too longfaced but otherwise has a very typical Basque face (Dalid type by Krutwig's standards, more typical of Biscay).
Anyhow, the second Atlantid lady of the first row looks to me Mediterranean (Iberian type, typical of the Valencian Country in fact). Compare with the Basquid woman to her left (who looks a lot like Jone Goirizelaia): the Med woman has not just darker skin shades and bigger eyes but also a much rounder (oval) skull, with regular non-Cromagnoid gonials and cheeks and a high rooted nose. Instead the Jone-bis lady has marked gonials, cheeks and nasion. They are very very different and in fact they may represent two totally different, almost opposite archetypes.
ReplyDeletebonjour,
