Iluro was the capital of the Aquitanian Iluronensi who controlled the 3 Béarnaise valleys (Barétous-Aspe-Ossau) and the confluence of the Gave d'Aspe and Gave d'Ossau rivers. Oloronais - a plausible division of the great Tarbellian civitas - was annexed to Béarn in the XIth century. Placenames do hint to the Basque past of the area : Moumour, Bidos, Estialescq, Orin, ... Souletine Basque still is spoken in one village of the zone named Esquiule (Eskiula in Basque) and in some hamlets of Géronce (Jeruntze in Basque) and Geüs (Üstazü en basque) : cf Map.

Taille réelle / Full Scale
- Analyse anthropologique sommaire / Brief anthropological analysis :
- Type 1 : Complexion intermédiaire (cheveux de foncés à blonds, yeux parfois clairs, ...), leptomorphique, nez convexe et long plutôt parallèle à la face, yeux rapprochés, oreilles décollées, menton en pointe, mâchoires larges
~ Atlanto-Mediterranéen dinarisé
Intermediate complexion (from dark to blonde hair, frequent light eyes, ...), leptomorphic, convex and long nose rather parallel to the face, close-set eyes, lop ears, pointy chin, large jaw
~ Dinaricized Atlanto-Mediterranean

Ce type présente clairement de très fortes affinités basques et est très dominant. On rencontre une variante peut-être moins archétypique.
This type presents clear Basque affinities and is very prevailing. A less archetypal variant can be found.

Toujours dans la même variabilité, on rencontre des individus plus brachymorphiques qui montrent des traits secondaires très basques : nez arché, yeux gris, cheveux noirs, ...
Within this variability, one can detect more brachymorphic individuals who exhibit secondary traits which are very Basque : an arched nose, grey eyes, black hair, ...

- Type 2 : Complexion intermédiaire, plus ou moins leptomorphique, nez parfois large mais droit, larges mâchoires, yeux rapprochés
~ Alpino-Mediterranéen
Intermediate complexion, more or less leptomorphic, straight nose that can get broad, large jaw, close-set eyes
~ Alpino-Mediterranean

- Morphotypes finaux / Final morphotypes :

I find the first group of people just before the "typically Basque" sentence to be the less typical in fact. Ok, the women and the guy of the middle can be but the blond guy of the right could be from anywhere, really (specially anywhere around the North Sea), and does not appear to me as "typically Basque".
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand many of your supposed "Alpino-Meds" look again strikingly Basque to me, as do many among the darker variants of the "Dinarized AM" type. Maybe it has to do with Northern Basques being blonder? I don't think so.
I give these Bearnais a "Basque Index(TM)" of 15 or 16, i.e. 50% (that corrected is like 95%).
Salut.
