Boulonnais was the maritime part of true Picardy, a border-country inbetween Paris and Germanic lands. The very term of "Picard" had initially an ethnic meaning : it designated the Romance speakers which inhabited lands North of Île-de-France. The Picard language's phonetic characteristics might hint to a remote Germanic substrate (Latin initial counsonants such as "ca" are maintained) which match the Belgian past of the area. Placenames in the surroundings of Boulogne (Bonen in Dutch) were obviously formed in the Dutch language : Maninghen, Echinghen, Bazinghen, Hervelinghen, ...

Gallia Belgica- Echantillon représentatif / Sample :
Taille réelle / Full Scale- Analyse anthropologique sommaire / Brief anthropological analysis :
- Type 1 : Complexion claire, brachymorphique, orbites supérieures développées, nez petit assez flasque, front haut et droit, larges pommettes, large mâchoire, yeux éloignés
~ Borreby
Light complexion, brachymorphic, developed browridges, little and rather flabby nose, high and straight forehead, broad cheekbones, broad jaw, wide-set eyes
~ Borreby

Type classique de la France du Nord, on en rencontre une variante plus sombre.
A classical type from northern France, a darker variant can be identified.

Une variante intéressante qui fait transition avec le second type est caractérisée par un nez convexe : c'est le type le plus fréquent dans la zone étudiée. Les yeux sont très distants chez les femmes et nous rappellent certains types "germaniques" rencontrés en Moselle.
An interesting variant which is transitional with type 2 is characterized by a convex nose : this is this area's most abundant type. Eyes are quite distant amongst women and remind us of "Germanic" types found in Moselle.

- Type 2 : Complexion claire (yeux gris, cheveux clairs, ...), leptomorphique, leptoprosopique, long nez, dinaromorphisme, longue et étroite mâchoire, yeux rapprochés
~ Nordique dinarisé ie Celtique-Nordique
Light complexion (grey eyes, light hair, ...), leptomorphic, leptoprosopic, long nose, dinaromorphism, long and narrow jaw, close-set eyes
~ Diaricized Nordid aka Keltic-Nordic

(voir : Flandre).
This is a classical counterpart to Type 1 in those areas. A variant - trivially named "horsy face" - visibly shows strong ethnic traits that one can label as "Flemish" failing a proper term : darker complexion, well defined facial traits, a rather small mouth, straight nose, ... See Flanders.

- Morphotypes finaux / Final morphotypes :

Your "transitional Borreby" types look Italian to me in many cases. Particularly the two blond guys with curly hair and "triangular" faces.
ReplyDeleteIn that same group, D6 has a very interesting unique type that I know it's similar to some Basque family I know but that in fact seems most common in some odd areas of the European North.
Some of your Keltids are very close to Basque types. BI=2.
