Inbetween the Rhône river and the Cévennes mountains, the Celtic people of the Helvii inhabited the southern part of the modern département of Ardèche. The "Plateau des Gras" - an importat megalithic site - was a key area with the city of Alba, capital of Helvia, which whill be replaced by Viviers in the IVth century the name of which is the province's name : Vivarais.

- Echantillon représentatif / Sample :
Taille réelle / Full Scale- Analyse anthropologique sommaire / Brief anthropological analysis :
- Type 1 : Complexion intermédiaire (yeux noirs, cheveux châtains, ...), leptomorphique, face large, long nez implanté haut et convexe, yeux rapprochés, mâchoire très large et bombé, menton pointu
~ Nordo-Méditerranéen dinaromorphique
Intermediate complexion (dark eyes, chestnut hair, ...), leptomorphic, large face, long and high-rooted convex nose, close-set eyes, very large and bombed jaw, pointy chin
~ Dinaromorphic Nordo-Mediterranean

A very common phenotype in southern France (and that is getting rare in High Vivarais bordering Arpitanian countries). The lower face is quite remarkable. Even more original and localized types can be found : lighter complexion, a convex nose, light eyes (aqua-blue eyes), pseudo-epicanthus, ... I don't visualize many French counterparts to these phenotypes, somehow it reminds me of some Lombard types.

- Type 2 : Complexion intermédiaire, brachymorphique, tête ronde, petit nez implanté bas assez large, yeux éloignés
~ Alpinoïde
Intermediate complexion, brachymorphic, round face, little low-rooted nose that can get rather broad, wide set eyes
~ Alpinoid

Type fréquent dans le Sud de la France, plus particulièrement dans la vallée inférieure du Rhône. Certains individus (complexion claire, nez épaté, ...) pourraient déjà annoncer les pays arpitans.
A very common type in southern France, more particularly in the lower valley of the Rhône river. Some individuals (light complexion, snub nose, ...) may already announce Arpitanian lands.

- Morphotypes finaux / Final morphotypes :
Many give me a curious vibe between "Vascoid" and "Britanoid" but without really reaching either archetypes, like something in between...
ReplyDeleteAlso, please compare D6 with the face we commented the other day of a blond Andalusian. This one is more "normal" (for our Pyrenean viewpoint) but still makes a good comparison.
what exactly is "dinaromorphic"?
ReplyDeleteThis is a rather pedantic word to identify more angular individuals (essentially speaking a convex nose) on an identified basis (dinaromorphic Meds, dinaromorphic Alpines, ...). It's completely artificial but it's necessary to take into account that "dinaromorphism" is an important secondary feature.
ReplyDeleteIt's also a convenient way not to use the term "Dinarid" that must be kept to describe brachycephalic convex-nosed people from Central Europe (as most "dinaromorphic" people in Western Europe are supposed to be mesocephalic).
