Castelnaudary : Aude (Languedoc)

Lauragais is a little medieval entity formerly shared by two dioceses : Toulouse and Saint-Papoul, both of them being dismantlements of the former city of the Volcae Tectosages, a Celtic tribe that reached the zone in the 3rd century BC. Parts belonging to Saint-Papoul around the town of Castelnaudary were included into "Aude". Lauragais is situated on the main axis uniting the Aquitanian basin and the Mediterranean.

  • Analyse anthropologique sommaire / Brief anthropological analysis :

- Type 1 : Complexion intermédiaire (cheveux plutôt bruns, yeux clairs), leptomorphique, face plutôt large, nez convexe, yeux rapprochés, sourcils épais, mâchoire large
~ Nordo-Méditerranéen dinaromorphique

Intermediate complexion (rather dark hair, light eyes), leptomorphic, rather large face, convex nose, close-set eyes, thick eyebrows, large jaw

~ Dinaromorphic Nordo-Mediterranid

Once more, the main type of this part of Languedoc -characterized by striking light eyes - is rather dominating. Some individuals are within a more Mediterranoid spectrum.

- Type 2 : Complexion intermédiaire, brachymorphique, face large, tête ronde, nez large et robuste, yeux plutôt distancés, large mâchoire
~ Alpino-Méditerranéen

Intermediate complexion, brachymorphic, large face, round head, large and robust nose, rather distanced eyes, large jaw
~ Alpino-Mediterranean

This physical type - known as Ibero-insular by XIXth century French anthropologists - is a well identified South-Languedocian type quite representative from what could be called an "Ibero-Pyrenean" variability which includes neighbouring Catalonia. The following - and sometimes dinaromorphic - variant - characterized by rather puffy physical features (distanced eyes, full lips, broad and puffy nose on males, ...) and tendencies to rufosity - is quite archetypal.

  1. "Alpino-Mediterranean"

Heraus, seriously, if you see someone with a rectangular hipsocephalic face, that one can't be classified as Alpinid but will most likely be a West Mediterranean, Atlanto-Mediterranean or simply Atlantid. Alpinids by definition have round or square faces and gracil-Mediterraneans have them oval.

Some days you nail your classifications but other days they really suck (sorry but have to be honest).

And I think you tend to abuse the category Alpinid or Alpino-whatever. I would say you need to focus more on the shape of the face (as profiles are not usually available) and you could well start describing people faces as mere "rectangle", "square", "circle" and "oval", rather than insisting in Coonish terminology that is so difficult to apply without profile images.

There are other elements, of course, but that "geometric" pattern is the most obvious.

Then you might go on to measure skin/eyes color, lip thickness, nose shape (narrow/wide, high/low rooted, hooked/regular/upturned) etc. That way you might get a useful statistical produce from your hard work of face collection.

BI:10, somewhat high. The next important group would be Mediterranean with Iberiand and West Asian affinities mostly mixed. Very few with Nordic tendencies though there is at least one (B5).

I've chosen to let people comment freely on my posts. Nevertheless, you'll lose your time taunting me and calling me a fascist (which I'm really not) : I pray you to read my introduction which will reassure that my intentions genuinely aim at achieving amateurish knowledge. I understand that you may not share my passion for the history of the peopling of the World, just don't let me know as clear conscience gained by bashing a humble documentary work is useless.
