The area that Gourdon controls is named Bouriane and has been inhabited by humans since the Upper Paleolithic (25.000 BC) as proved by drawings found in the grotto of Cougnac. The area was then included in the Celtic civitas of the Cadurci that will become medieval Quercy : Gourdon is a probable Gaulish placename formed on Celtic dunum (fortress).

- Echantillon représentatif / Sample :
Taille réelle / Full Scale- Analyse anthropologique sommaire / Brief anthropological analysis :
- Type 1 : Brun, brachymorphique, petit nez épaté concave et implanté bas, tête large et carrée, yeux éloignés
~ Alpin
Dark, brachymorphic, flat and concave low-rooted nose, broad squared face, wide-set eyes
~ Alpinid

Nous avons déjà rencontré ce type dans le Périgord voisin, il est ici notablement moins prévalent.
We already encountered that type in neighbouring Périgord, it is much less prevailing in this area.
- Type 2 : Complexion intermédiaire (yeux noirs, cheveux châtains, ...), leptomorphique, face large, long nez implanté haut et convexe, yeux rapprochés, mâchoire très large et bombé, menton pointu
~ Nordo-Méditerranéen dinaromorphique
Intermediate complexion (dark eyes, chestnut hair, ...), leptomorphic, large face, long and high-rooted convex nose, close-set eyes, very large and bombed jaw, pointy chin
~ Dinaromorphic Nordo-Mediterranean

This is a classical SW French phenotype which gets rarer as one is heading towards the Massif Central. More local types - intermediary with the first type - are found : they're characterized by a rather short and large face. This type was identified in Périgord : this is the ultimate Guyennais phenotype.

- Morphotypes finaux / Final morphotypes :
Again a quite Iberoid sample, with a meaningful subset of individuals rather in the Basque range and yet others that may be more specifically South French "Mediterranid".
