Ma famille / My family : Part 1

Je m'essaie à quelque chose de nouveau pour varier un peu : une étude anthropologique sur une lignée donnée. Bien évidemment, je vais traiter de ma propre famille. Cependant, si des lecteurs de ce blog entendent contribuer à cet album photographique, c'est avec plaisir que leur ouvre les portes de ce blog. Je commencerai cette étude en quatre parties par la famille de ma grand-mère maternelle.

I'm trying something new to change a bit : an anthropological study of one lineage. Undoubtedly enough, this study will be about my own family but I welcome other contributions from readers with pleasure. I'll begin this 4-part study with my maternal grandmother's family.



Comme l'intégralité de mes ancêtres, les ascendants de ma grand-mère maternelle sont originaires du Béarn, une ancienne vicomté pyrénéenne de langue gasconne, non loin de l'Aragon et des pays de langue basque. Le point noir correspond au foyer d'où est originaire la famille du père de ma grand-mère. Parallèlement, le point rouge indique le foyer de sa propre famille maternelle. Il s'agit de deux zones relevant de la même zone géographique dans les vallées des Luys dans l'ancien territoire des Venarni, peuplade aquitanique dont la capitale était Beneharnum (aujourd'hui Lescar).

Like all my ancestors, my maternal grandmother's ancestors originate from Béarn, a former Gascon-speaking Pyrenean viscounty in SW France, not far from Aragon and modern Basque-speaking areas. The black dot points to where my grandmother's paternal family was from. In the same way the red dot points to where her mother was born. Both areas belong to the same geographic zone in the valleys of the Luy rivers in the former territory of the Venarni, an Aquitanian people whose capital was Beneharnum (modern Lescar).

• Ma grand-mère maternelle / My maternal grandmother :

Caractères saillants : brachymorphisme, nez convexe implanté haut, pommettes hautes, yeux verts, cheveux châtains ~ Alpino-Atlantide dinaromorphique

Prominent characteristics : brachymorphism, high-rooted convex nose, high cheekbones, green eyes, chestnut hair ~ Dinaromorphic Alpino-Atlantid

• La famille paternelle / The paternal family :

- Le père de ma grand-mère / My grandmother's father :

Caractères saillants : leptomorphisme, nez convexe implanté haut, pommettes hautes, yeux rapprochés et clairs ~ Atlantide dinaromorphique

Prominent characteristics : leptomorphism, high-rooted convex nose, high cheekbones, light close-set eyes ~ Dinaromorphic Atlantid

Ce phénotype est très commun en Béarn, mais souvent dans une variante plus foncée. La fratrie est quasi toute entière acquise à ce phénotype. *

This phenotype is quite common in Béarn, yet quite often in a darker variant. Siblings more or less show similar phenotypes. *

- Les grands-parents paternels / Her paternal grandparents :

On constate que le trait le plus caractéristique de la famille à savoir les pommettes hautes est particulièrement prononcé chez la grand-mère paternelle. Voici ses parents avec des habits typiques des paysans de l'époque :

One can notice that the family's most characteristic trait - high cheekbones - was quite pronounced on my grandmother's paternal grandmother. Here are her parents with typical peasant clothes :

• La famille maternelle / The maternal family :

- La mère de ma grand-mère / My grandmother's mother :

Caractères saillants : brachymorphisme, nez convexe implanté haut, pommettes hautes, yeux plutôt éloignés ~ Alpin dinaromorphique

Prominent characteristics : brachymorphism, high-rooted convex nose, high cheekbones, rather distanced eyes ~ Dinaromorphic Alpinid

On ne peut que constater la persistance du trait familial, à savoir les pommettes hautes, dans l'autre branche également ! Il s'agit d'un trait local très notable que l'on retrouve sur toute la façade atlantique en France. On retrouve ce trait chez ses trois frères.

One has to notice that high cheekbones are also present on that side of the family ! This is a very noticeable local trait that is found in the whole Atlantic coast. This trait is found on her three brothers.
