Narbonne : Aude (Bas-Languedoc)

La cité de Narbo s'étendait de la frontière moderne entre Catalogne et Languedoc dans les Corbières jusqu'aux Monts de Lacaune au Nord : la région de Narbonne au débouché de l'Aude en était le centre. L'étude de l'épigraphie ancienne fait la preuve qu'une langue apparentée à l'ibère fut parlée dans les environs : par exemple, Larrason(is) -nom d'apparence basco-ibère indubitable - était un dieu honoré à Narbonne. Le nom même de Narbonne est composé d'une racine basco-ibère indéfinie *narb que l'on retrouve dans de nombreux lieux-dits pyrénéens, dont l'homonyme Arbonne en Labourd, anciennement Narbona. Au IIIème siècle avant JC, la région est cependant intégrée au monde celtique consécutivement à la conquête par les Volques. La question de l'ethnie des Elysiques qui habitaient Narbonne n'est à ce titre pas résolue : des Celtes ? des Ibéro-Celtes ?

The city of Narbo extended from the modern border between Catalonia and Languedoc in the Corbières mountains to the Mounts of Lacaune in the North : the area around Narbonne situated at the mouth of the Aude river was the centre of this city. Epigraphic studies prove that a language close to Iberian was spoken in the area : for instance Larrason(is) - a very Basco-Iberian name - was a God revered in the urbs. The very name of Narbonne is made of one unknown Basco-Iberian root *narb found in many Pyrenean placenames, amongst them the homonymous Arbonne in Labourd, formerly Narbona. In the 3rd century BC, the region was integrated into the Celtic world after the conquest by the Volcae. In that respect, the ethnic character of the local Elysiques inhabiting these lands remains a mystery : Celts ? Ibero-Celts ?

Ainsi que nous l'avions constaté à Saint-Pons, extension septentrionale de l'ancien diocèse de Narbonne, ce type si commun dans le Sud-Ouest de la France est ici rare.

As we had already noticed in Saint-Pons, a northern extension of the former diocese of Narbonne, that type which is very common in SW France is rather rare in that area.


- Type 2 : Complexion intermédiaire (cheveux clairs, yeux clairs, ...), brachymorphique, tête large, yeux éloignés, mâchoires larges, nez petit et large
~ Alpinoïde

Intermediate complexion (light hair, light eyes, ...), brachymorphic, wide face, wide-set eyes, large jaw, little and broad nose

Les types brachymorphiques sont ainsi très dominants dans l'échantillon : on ne peut que constater la réalité de ce phénomène très atypique autour de l'ancien diocèse de Narbonne. En voici une autre série plus ou moins leptomorphique.

Brachymorphic types are thus very prevailing in this sample : one can only notice the reality of such phenomenon in the outskirts of Narbonne. Another series more or less leptomorphic :




Finalement, ces types sont complétés par des variantes dinaromorphiques (ou au nez imposant) plus classiques du Languedoc qui font transition avec les individus définis sous le premier type.

Eventually, these types are completed by dinaromorphic (or just big-nosed) variants which are more on par with Languedocian variability and in transition with Type 1 individuals.
